The Cast
Various town characters like Jon Woodlands, famous for his role in the Woollies campaign, turned up to try out. All were given a short screen test, asked to improvise on a potential scene in the film. I had noticed Sue Stevens at a Maleny film evening and thought there was something very expressive and a bit sad in her face. Her audition consisted of me whipping her into the cloak room before the feature, sticking a camera in her face and saying "talk". I have never done a more cursory audition and have never felt so right about my choice.
The film became the story of Sue, an older woman sitting on a valuable property who recently lost her husband Phillip (she had). Sue's daughters were chosen by putting a few women of approximately the right age together with Sue and seeing who created the right chemistry. Robin and Louise made a great pair as sisters and daughters, being so different, Robin, warm and hippie-ish, and Louise much sharper.
It was not hard to find the men. Louise already knew Johan with is his intriguing foreign accent. He became the more pro-development of the sons-in-law and the bad guy from the point of view of the film's politics. Touchingly in the end credits, when everyone gets a chance to say what it was like to be in MMAM, Johan says it was fine to be the bad guy on the screen but a good guy in real life. As the second son-in-law, Jon Woodland's role promised to be very funny as someone torn by the possibilities of making a killing in real estate, because in real life that idea is so far from his usual convictions.
